Marine Biology

Aim of the course:

Participants will be familiarized with Marine biology in theory and get to know the most important groups of marine animals and plants and their modes of life.

After completing the course participants should

  • have more eventful dives due to a greater understanding of ecological interrelations at sea.
  • minimize their own influence on the marine biosphere.
  • identifying possible negative changes within the biosphere.

 

Minimum age:

14 years. Minors need a signed consent form of a parent or guardian!

Required level of training:

CMAS* (Bronze)

Or equivalent qualification in reference to the equivalence list of the CMAS.

Further requirements:

  • A minimum of 20 dives (preferable 10 in the sea)
  • You need a valid medical statement of fitness for diving. (This certificate cannot be older than 2 years, alternatively, from an age of 40 onward, not older than 1 year.)

 

Instructor: Environmental Leader of the CMAS member associations with at least 50 dives

Assistant: Biologist with at least 50 dives or CMAS diving instructor with thorough marine-biological knowledge

Training units: 8-10

Learning Content:

  • Introduction to marine biology
  • The marine food chain
  • Habitats and modes of life in the sea
  • Different areas of the sea and their properties
  • Different forms of marine animals and plants
  • Causes and impacts of environmental pollution
  • Environmentally friendly behavior of divers in the sea

 

Exercises with diving gear:

There will be 2 dives if the course takes place close to the sea. In this case, the dives will be executed as guided dives, during which a diving instructor will show peculiarities to the participants, using for example a writing board.

Moreover, gathered animals and plants will be examined and classified in the lab by means of optical tools like magnifiers or microscopes.

At inland courses, participants should get the opportunity to see these animals alive (e.g. in zoos or aquariums).

Testing:

The instructor choses the examination method.

Certification:

As proof of your achievement, you will a get sticker for your diving pass as well as a certificate.
