Freshwater Biology

Aim of the course:

Participants will be familiarized with the limnology of larger bodies of standing water and learn about the most important groups of animals and plants in domestic lakes and their mode of life.

After completing the course participants should

  • have more eventful dives due to a greater understanding of ecological interrelations in lakes
  • minimize their own influence on the lake biosphere.
  • identifying possible negative changes within a lake’s biosphere.

Minimum age:

14 years. Minors need a signed consent form of a parent or guardian!

Required level of training:

CMAS* (Bronze) or an equivalent qualification in reference to the equivalence list of the CMAS.

Further requirements:

  • A minimum of 20 dives.
  • You need a valid medical statement of fitness for diving. (This certificate cannot be older than 2 years, alternatively, from an age of 40 onward, not older than 1 year.)

Instructor: Environmental Leader of the CMAS member associations with at least 50 dives

Assistant: Biologist with at least 50 dives or CMAS diving instructor with thorough marine-biological knowledge

Training units: 6-8

Learning Content:

  • Introduction to freshwater biology (limnology)
  • The freshwater food chain
  • Spatial structure of the lake
  • Seasonal changes within the lake
  • Animals and plants in the lake
  • Causes and impacts of environmental pollution
  • Environmentally friendly behavior of freshwater divers
  • Water treatment and measures for renaturation

Exercises with diving gear:

There will be 2-3 dives.

A lake with a diverse flora and fauna should be chosen. We dive in small groups (max. 3 divers) in max. 20m depth. In the course of the dive, plants and animals of the lake will be classified and noted down.

At the same time, the diving instructor will draw attention to the ecological peculiarities of the lake. After the dive, participants will jointly classify the plants and animals and discuss their observations.

Testing:

The instructor choses the examination method.

Certification:

As proof of your achievement, you will a get sticker for your diving pass as well as a certificate.
